Our bespoke wooden worktops, breakfast bars, islands, table tops, matching tables, benches, floating shelves and window sills are designed and produced in our workshop in the beautiful surroundings of the South Downs. The continuous stave worktops are made from the finest English and European wood with their unique characteristics and distinctive grain. The boards are hand-picked to make them colour and grain compatible.

We also keep in stock a wide selection of timber slabs 600mm – 1000mm width, however, it is not unusual for us to produce the tables, table tops and islands from single slabs over 1 metre wide.

Which Natural Wooden Worktop Will Best Suit Your Home?

Natural Character with Resin Infill.  Blending the beauty of nature with cutting edge style and technology, this is a worktop that’s sure to be a much-loved feature in your home for years to come.

Resin Infill is a specialist technique from Earthy Timber that fills in a wooden worktop’s natural imperfections, gaps, scatterings of pip and sound open knots with high quality epoxy resin to give it a modern and creative twist.   This process fills in knots, cracks, in-grown bark whilst making a feature of them, giving light and life to a wooden surface.  Each tactile piece is unique and expertly crafted, incorporating and making the most of the natural swirls, whirls and variously-sized knots naturally found within wood.

Our waterproof Resin Infill pieces are true show-stoppers and hands-down best sellers with our customers.  Highly durable, hard-wearing and hygienic to use the results are stunning.  The Resin Infill subtly filters and reflects light, complementing the unique patterns in wood.  This worktop will give you joy every single day.

Prime Grade.  With very few, if any, knots or natural imperfections, this type of wood creates a worktop that suits a modern, cutting edge kitchen.

Perfect for a more uniform, contemporary look, its sleek appearance offers durable beauty for a sleek, sophisticated style.  With a clean, almost “perfect” form, you’ll be combining nature and distinction for a striking look in your home.

Natural Character Grade.  If you’re an artisan who creates beautiful pieces from wood, Timberdeal has a wide selection of wooden slabs and rustic worktops, to empower your skills to fashion magnificent works of great elegance and style to last the test of time.

Aimed squarely at the professional, our raw, character worktops and slabs are full of rustic features and charm, rich in colour and texture and boasting all the patterns, knots and naturally occurring imperfections that make up the natural beauty of wood.  This more rustic grade or type may contain divisions or cracks that require further work, they may also show some sapwood, scatterings of pip and open knots.  At Timberdeal, we offer these pieces to those whose knowledge and skill enables them to work with resin and who know how best to finish rustic oak or rustic walnut worktop to enhance the natural features within it.

Aged and distressed wood  – on request the worktops can be sandblasted to achieve texture and depth.

What is the best finish for my surface?

Oil

What is it?

Finishing oil is – in our opinion – the best method of finishing surfaces thanks to its maximum protection and organic appearance. The unique properties of oil enhance the grain over time and amplify the rich, natural colours of wood, so you have everything to look forward to in the upcoming years.

How does it work?

The oil flows deep into the core of the timber to form an extensive protective layer. This creates a shield-like effect that prevents damage once the top layer of oil begins to fade. Oil-finishing requires no budget-hungry interventions in contrast to lacquer or varnish, as it is both easier to repair and less likely to show signs of wear. Your surface will require occasional re-oiling in accordance with our maintenance guide so that your timber remains nourished and beautiful. The oiled-finish is perfect for those who love the natural qualities of wood and wish to enhance them with a solution that offers no compromises.

Earthy Timber® recommended natural oils

We use a blend of high quality, fragrant oils, ideal for surfaces requiring a hard-wearing, water-resistant finish. The protective layer built by the finishing oil is water-, heat-, alcohol- and food acid-resistant. It can be purchased as part of the Earthy® Timber customer care kit, which contains our recommended blend of oils, a lint-free cloth and aftercare instructions.

Varnish

What is it?

Varnish is a great solution for those seeking a clear wood finish. Its durable, protective coating and higher viscosity are perfect for surfaces frequently exposed to moisture. Unlike oil, which intensifies the depth of the colour palette, varnish maintains the natural colours of wood with a transparent, preservative layer. It is widely considered – to an extent – a middle ground between oil and lacquer.

How does it work?

Varnish can be spread over both raw and newly stained wood or even older layers of the same finish, granted the wood is thoroughly sanded. Due to its higher levels of viscosity, varnish does not penetrate the timber as effectively as oil, which consequently means it does not provide further protection underneath its surface. The finish may require recoating as often as every year if the timber is subjected to more challenging conditions, however if maintained correctly, most surfaces can last years without reapplication. There are also many varieties of varnish suited for your specific needs; the oil varnish, consisting of a solvent and a drying oil, is the preferred choice for wooden surfaces. Meanwhile, the natural varnish, made from tree sap, is frequently used as a maintenance coating to previously varnished items. The biggest disadvantage to varnish is that it will eventually crack or peel, which leaves the surface prone to discolorations and moisture damage.

Earthy Timber® recommended varnish

We utilise a water-based, low VOC solution that offers high resistance to scratches and stains whilst maintaining the natural beauty and feel of the wood. It is ideal for use on soft or hardwood furniture and most interior woodwork; such as shelves, worktops, breakfast bars, islands and work surfaces. The mixture also features an innovative non-yellowing, quick-drying formula.

Lacquer

What is it?

Lacquer provides an intense gloss finish often used on many ultramodern furnishings. The strong protective layer formed over surface of the timber makes a lacquer-finish extremely durable and resistant to damage. Due to its consistency, lacquer must be applied via a high volume, low pressure sprayer.

How does it work?

Lacquer is essentially a resin mixed with a solvent. When the lacquer is applied, the solvent evaporates and the hard resin is left on the surface of the wood forming a transparent, durable seal. A prominent superlative of a lacquer-finish is that its thick coating makes it – granted the spill is wiped up reasonably quickly – somewhat water-resistant. Unfortunately, its high-gloss effect also renders scratches and marks more visible. It is important to remember that even a matte lacquer-finish has a noticeable amount of shine to it. The best course of action when the surface begins to look tired and worn is to re-sand and re-spray, which could prove to be rather tedious and budget-hungry over time. Furthermore, once the top layer of lacquer is worn away, the bare wood is left exposed and susceptible to damage. Nevertheless, the protection offered by lacquer is arguably the toughest of all, which makes it a practical solution for those seeking a hard-wearing finish for their surface.

Sophisticated simplicity of a raw edge (live edge) or square edge worktop

Our premium quality solid wood worktops can be made with a bespoke choice of 5 different finishes on the edges. The choices are: live edge, otherwise known as natural edge, raw edge or waney edge; natural edge with the bark preserved, a modern clean line square edge or square edge with the bark preserved with clear resin, partially live, partially square edge.

Real wood is one of the finest and most precious natural materials. Solid wood bespoke worktops, wooden breakfast bars, wooden islands, matching solid wood tables, benches, hardwood floating shelves and window sills radiate warmth and benefit from distinctive nuances.

 European v American

European oak with it’s beautiful grain, colour variation, and unique features is very different to its American, very light and uniform distant cousin. European oak is also denser and harder as it grows slower in a colder climate and harsher weather conditions. It will better withstand dents, marking, and general wear and tear than the American, faster growing oak. If you desire uniqueness and strength closer to home, remember your royal predecessors built ships and conquered the world using local oak! European oak is also suitable for tight cooperage, unlike American oak which is too porous and unsuitable for outside usage due to its lack of durability.
